... dogs at the beach

as much as i love beaches, as soon as you take a dog to the beach, the excitement factor pretty much doubles. i could spend hours at the beach just throwing a ball and watching a dog swim out to retrieve it.

the road to the beach

my parents' dog, layla, especially loves the beach. maybe, even, as much as i do.

layla at the beach

she sometimes waits patiently for the ball to be thrown. but most times she plonks it down about 10 feet away from where you are standing and just barks until you walk over and get it. she knows who's boss.

leaving the beach

leaving the beach is always hard. the other day we forgot layla and had to go back. she had found some suckers kids and, using her cuteness and doggy wiles, no doubt, gotten them to throw the ball for her in our absence.

post-beach bath

i also love watching dogs get bathed. it's all soapy soggy hairy doggy goodness.

post-beach bath

i am pretty sure that layla doesn't like this part as much as i do.

post-beach bath

well, maybe she does just a little.

... the rotary auction, part 2

i do so love the little treasures i found at the rotary auction. i love that these are things that i didn't have to fight anyone for, that they spoke to me and, probably, me alone.

holy guacamole, look at that pile of scraps! only $2, for a jam-packed bag filled with some great little scraps. i'm thinking these will make a nice little log cabin quilt or somesuch.

a few larger bits of fabric picked out of the bins. i think these totaled about $1.50 altogether.

vintage sheets

pretty vintage sheet sets. only $2.50 each. will make lovely quilts someday.

the good cook series

i already have most of the books from the good cook series, but found three that i was missing. ooh, pies & pastries! fun! $1 for each book.

i don't know why, but this painting (yes, an actual painting, by someone named "jane" apparently) really called to me. i love the obvious amateurishness of it, and the wood frame is terrific. only $4 folks!

it is possible i may be the only person who likes these bird figurines/vases, but i have enough love for them to make up for everyone else's disdain. and each was just $1.

there were a few things i passed by and am now regretting just a little (an old globe, a stereo console that would have made a great table), but i can live without them, too.

plus, there's always next year.

... the rotary auction

every year, the weekend before the 4th of july, the bainbridge island rotary has its annual auction & rummage sale. i have only missed it once in the last 10 years, i love it so.

it is so large, and there is so much stuff, that it fills an entire middle school, inside and out. most people don't believe me when i tell them how big it is. the roads are filled with cars from all directions around the school, and you usually have to walk quite a ways from where you park. that's okay, because bainbridge is so beautiful and the walk is always nice.

this year i came over from seattle on an early morning ferry and lined up with the crowds to wait for it to start. after the national anthem is sung, everyone starts running for the things they want. it is a sight not to be missed.

i was more of a saunterer this year. i didn't know what i wanted, but figured i would know when i saw it. i usually go to the lamp room, the art room, housewares, collectibles, and books and games. and, of course, i always browse the giant lot filled with furniture. this year, though, since i've taken up sewing, i realized there were areas for fabric and linens. and it was a gold mine!

but mostly, i just like looking at the crazy things and the crazy people.

... hosting book club

yes, i really do! i really do love it when it's my chance to host book club. i love the opportunity to give the house a super thorough cleaning, i love thinking and plotting about what food to make, and i love spending hours in the kitchen cooking up a storm. and, of course, i love having friends over for good discussion and good company.

proofed yeast

among other things, i made an onion fennel tart, an old favorite. the dough is made from scratch, natch.

eggs & oil

chopped up onions and fennel

that's a lot of chopped up onions and fennel!

onion and fennel tart

good thing it all cooked down enough to fit on my tart.

i also made devil's food cupcakes with chocolate ganache frosting from the new martha stewart's cupcakes.

action shot!

i have to be honest. i had some frosting issues. it didn't quite set up properly and i wound up with a slightly grainy texture. it still tasted good, so i didn't feel bad about serving them. some chocolate shavings on top also helped to mask the less-than-perfect appearance.

... surprise gifts

little picture

this tiny illustration was a tiny gift from c to me. just because. and aren't those the sweetest gifts of all?

it is by lucy knisley, who does a lovely comic. you may have seen her spot-on twilight strip a while back.

... the beach

i forget sometimes, living so close to the water, how much i love the beach. today, as we were walking down the beach at carkeek park, checking out the minus tide, and smelling the salty sea air (seriously, so salty!), i thought it's a crime that we don't go to the beach every day.

the salty, crunchy seaweed made me want sushi so bad. we stopped by the store and got a cucumber roll on the way home. i also love satiating cravings.

we were hoping to see some tidepools, but there were none to be found. just the occasional dead crab.

small crab

but the beach is full of little treasures no matter what the tide happens to be. i picked out the small greenish rock, c picked out the black rock. they look nice together, in all their barnacled goodness.

... farm share

farm share

today was the first day of our 2009 farm share! ours is from the fabulous helsing junction farm.

we did it for the first time last year and we totally got our money's worth. except for the occasional moldy garlic and wormy corn, the produce was a delight. but, you takes your chances with a farm share, so it's all cool beans. and it's all organic and all grown on their farm outside of olympia, wa.

farm share 2

the first week's produce box contained: three pints of strawberries, garlic scapes, one giant head of lettuce, one smaller head of lettuce, three sweet onions, carrots, snow peas, cilantro and chives.

those strawberries are so amazing.

garlic scapes

don't know what garlic scapes are? don't worry, until last year i didn't either. turns out they are the delicious flowering tops to the garlic that they cut off so that the garlic bulb will turn into a delicious orb of goodness beneath the soil. but those tops are delicious themselves, and often described as a cross between garlic and asparagus. you can make them into a yummy pesto or saute them or whatever.

i am so looking forward to the weeks to come.

... cocoa

i am a firm believer in cocoa before bedtime. it's nice to have a small treat to look forward to at the end of the day. i make mine with unsweetened almond milk and a couple of scoops of ghirardelli double chocolate cocoa. double yum.

... pink shoes

all star

i do not own that many shoes. so it is a statement that several pairs of those in my closet happen to be pink.

some i wear quite frequently, and some i throw on for only special occasions.

flip flops

and always remember that it is imperative that you coordinate with your gardening tools.

... our flag

happy flag day!

something happened around, about, last november, and, i don't know, it's like i suddenly felt somehow patriotic. and then, i guess it was around february, and i suddenly had this urge to fly a flag on our house. so, today being flag day and all, it was time to inaugurate our new flag.

happy flag day to all!
